FAQ - Backup Quicken Files Correctly

Problem:

I tried to copy my Quicken files over to a CD and now Quicken can't see it. Why?

Solution:

Quicken must make the backup to the directory for you. It indexes it and writes retrieval information for the original location and when you move it (copy the file elsewhere), it can't retrieve the information. You can't just copy the original datafile to any drive. If you do, Quicken will fail to open it.

Note: We have noted the occasional problem with backups to cd-roms, unfortunately, we have no way to recover data saved to cd's.

It is recommended that you save your critical files to your network share drive. The Computer Center makes backups of all shared drives so if your database ever crashes or gets corrupted, we can restore the file for you. All we need is the last know good date and the location of the file. The authorized owner of the file must call the Help Desk at X4585 to put in a Restore order.

To do a proper Quicken Backup:

  1. Select FILE
  2. Select BACKUP
  3. In the backup selection window, browse to the directory where you want to store your backup.
  4. Click OK
  5. It will create and index the backup file for you.

NOTE: For all critical data, verify your backups by opening the backup file and verifying the contents. When you next work on your datafile, make sure you open the original one and not the backup.

If you are concerned about who has access to your Quicken database file and need to restrict access to it, the Computer Center can set up a special share drive and restrict access to the people you name.
