FAQ - Windows XP: Stop Hibernation when Laptop Lid is Closed

Solution:

  1. Click Start.
  2. Click Control Panel.
  3. Make sure the Control Panel is in Classic View.
  4. Open the Power Options applet.
  5. In the Power Options Properties dialog box, click on the Advanced tab.
  6. On the Advanced tab, in the Power Buttons frame are two boxes. One is 'When I close the lid of my portable computer' and the other is 'When I press the power button on my computer'. Click the down arrow for the drop down list box for closing the lid option.
  7. You'll have the options: 'Do nothing', 'Stand by' and 'Hibernate'. If you don't want to Hibernate, you can choose one of the other two options.
  8. Click Apply
  9. Click OK.

Be careful with the Stand By option. The computer continues to draw power and if you leave it like this overnight it will drain the battery.
